Chapter 13: Deterrence and Arms Control

While the era of deterrence may by behind us, the general issue of how to use international and global mechanisms to deter and compel desired behavior remains one of the most important issues faced by foreign policy analysts. This is especially important in the arena of arms control, wherein not only nuclear, but biological and chemical weapons bring with them new political and ethical challenges.

The Defense Department is one good place to start, of course. For a good site on detailed information about the Chemical Weapons Convention and a history of chemical weapons, you'll find good detail and up-to-date information here.

The 1995 SIPRI has a good chapter (chapter 10) on chemical and biological weapons that is available online.

For information on nuclear proliferation, you might look at the fortnightly news Digest as well as the non-proliferation page from Canada.
